First year soccer player
Aaron is our eight year old son who enjoys soccer (his first season), jumping on the trampoline, science, friends, nature, and rollerblading. Aaron reminds us of Andrew; the energy level is very high most of the time! He is “a boy on the go”. Aaron lives for those special family times: going to the park, playing bingo (and getting candy), roasting marshmallows in the back yard, and playing 4-square. Recently, while on a walk with Tim, Stephen drove by in our van. Aaron asked if that was Stephen driving the van and Tim said yes, reminding Aaron that Stephen had his drivers license now. Aaron responded thoughtfully, “Boy, they grow up fast; don’t they?” We’ve all had some great laughs over that one!!! We’re thankful for his young life and his many passions!

Caleb, practicing a recital piece.
Caleb is our 10 year old son, who enjoys piano, chess, anything related to nature, golf, four-square, Bible quizzing and has some impressive art abilities, as well. Caleb is a great kid, has a sweet disposition and is a blessing to our family. We are looking forward to how God will use his gifts for His glory!

Our family, along with some other home-school families, enjoyed a visit to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. On display were several raptors including a bald eagle. We were able to feed various birds meal worms in an enclosed aviary. We listened to a presentation about the great horned owl and visited Seymore, a resident raptor. Then, we had the fun of dissecting owl pellets in an attempt to determine what little creature the owl had eaten. It was a very informative and well-done program.

Dana’s mom, Cheryl passed away on Friday morning, January 23, 2009. She had suffered a severe heart attack and died at Akron City Hospital with her daughter, Diane (and her husband, Guy and a dear nurse, Sarah), by her side. Together, Debbie, Dan (and Liz), Diane, Guy, and I took turns being with Mom through several days and nights in her room in ICU. We honored Mom with a dinner at our home on Saturday with several family members. Cousins, Marilyn and Chuck Sauer, drove 700 miles from Wisconsin to be with our family. Also from out of state, were cousins Tim McGrail and Tom McGrail. Ed Sauer and his wife, Gara, and Cousin Vicki, who has been such a help with Mom over the years, also came to the “memorial dinner”. My dad, Susan, and brother, David and Deb’s husband, Tom, and Liz, (Dan’s girlfriend) also came to be with family. We looked at Mom’s art work and reminisced over old photos. Mom was a creative, intelligent woman who loved the arts and literature. She also loved her children and grandchildren. How thankful we are for her life and how very much we will miss her!

The gathering together of family remains the most precious part of our Christmas celebration. It was great having Chris and Drew back. Tim’s sister, Peggy hosted a wonderful dinner party on Christmas eve. We also had visits from Dana’s father, Jerry and Susan, as well as Dana’s brother, Dan and mother, Cheryl.
Lookin’ Good!

It’s true, this man turned 50 in November! We were sternly warned NOT to celebrate with any big party, so we respected his wishes and had a nice dinner at home (with a dear friend watching our children!). He also received a gift certificate for a Hibachi Japanese dinner. Again, we are thankful for God’s faithfulness in Tim’s life. Surely he is a man who fears the Lord. He pursues those 3 P’s for our children: protect, provide and prepare. As we “launch” our children into this world, I cannot ask for a better husband and father! Things get awfully intense at times, yet we can still find those times to laugh! Indeed, we have seen the Lord’s favor in our home.
Our Dancer and Dog Lover

Michaela has been dancing for the past 3 years. This will be her third year performing in the Nutcracker. This year she will play a “Tea Dancer” (she is on the far right in red). She takes tap, modern and ballet. She loves to perform on stage and dance has been a wonderful opportunity for her . This fall she and two of her friends choreographed their own dance and performed at a Dance Showcase. We are thankful she has been able to take dance; she’s becoming quite a lovely young lady!
Michaela’s other great love is a furry cocker spaniel named Jake. Jake adores Michaela, probably because she bakes him birthday cakes and even gives him gifts! She’s done a great job caring for him.

Lydia is 5 years old and her favorite color is pink. Winter is her favorite season. She takes the very best care of Benjamin (age 2). During our schooling time, she is very good about getting him his snack and playing with him. He calls her something that sounds like “Ee-ahh”. Lydia loves to draw and will often tell quite involved stories about her drawings. She enjoys her art class very much.
You can often find her playing with her baby dolls or helping me in the kitchen. (She can crack eggs and cut up olives with great skill!) What a joy and a delight she is to our home.

On Saturday I went and had my second tattoo done at main-street studios in Ashland. It is the emblem of Czechoslovakia during the Nazi invasion.
Stephen’s Golf Season Wraps Up
Friday, October 31st, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments
The 2008 season held its share of ups and down for our aspiring young golfer. It started with an individual matchplay win at Firestone Country Club in Akron in early May and ended with a team appearance at the State High School Golf Championship at the Ohio State Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus in mid-October. Highlights included 3 first-place summer tournament finishes, the most important being a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Championship win at Hawthorn Valley Country Club in Solon, Ohio. Stephen also enjoyed participating on the Ashland High School Golf Team, in which he made First-Team All-Conference – and his team won first-place Conference, Sectional and District titles. The District title earned he and his four teammates an appearance at the Division-I State Finals in Columbus. All very encouraging opportunities for a young man Stephen’s age (15).
The season was not, however, without its share of disappointments. Stephen failed to finish as well as he would have liked in several key tournaments this year, including the High School State Finals in Columbus. Stephen finished with an 18-hole average of 78.3 for the year (a couple of strokes higher than he wished). The combination of these would have improved his resume and future chances of playing competitively at the college level in a couple of years (still a possibility he’s holding on to). We are told by God to give thanks IN EVERYTHING. And we do so this year for Steve and the sport he has come to love.
